It was nine o'clock before we finalized our plan and made it downstairs. Max had insisted on us wearing all black and had taken much too long painting black warrior paint all over our faces.

Jade pointed out that this made us look all the more suspicious, but Max convinced us that we'd be less noticeable. He, of course, won the argument by outlasting us, wearing us down until we barely had the energy to move forward with our plan.

We stood in front of Colonel Earl's door, the silence stretching between us like a tightrope. I glanced at Archer, my nerves fraying. "Are you sure this will work?"

He held up a small vial of powder. "This should keep him asleep. Just stay quiet." Max finished his magic picking the lock with a sharp click.

I hesitated for a moment, then reached out and slowly turned the doorknob. The door creaked open, sounding louder than I'd expected in the stillness of the hall. We slipped inside.

The apartment was dark, the only light seeping in from a streetlamp outside the window. The scent of old books mixed with something metallic filled the air. We tiptoed through the cluttered living room, our steps muffled by the worn carpet.

Reaching the bedroom, we found Colonel Earl snoring softly, just as we expected. Earl had made it known on multiple occasions that he rose with the sun and went to bed shortly after it set. Must've been an old military habit.

He was lying on his bed, completely unaware as Archer crept closer. With precision, Archer sprinkled the powder over the Colonel's face. The snoring immediately deepened, and Archer turned back to us.

"Okay," I said, my voice barely audible. "Let's find what we came for. Evidence."

We made ourselves busy, looking through the apartment, trying to find anything that would help us figure out if the old colonel was guilty of more than being an old coot.

The floorboards creaked under my feet and I froze. Heart pounding, I glanced at the bedroom door again. Jade was in her own world, thumbing through papers in the corner. Max had found a closet, and he gently pulled it open.

"Guys, look at this," Max said softly.

I crept over to him, peering over his shoulder. Rows of guns, all sizes and makes, were displayed with care. "Why does he have so many guns?"

Archer looked up from the desk he was rifling through. "He’s ex-special ops. But that seems excessive, even for him."

Jade let out a soft gasp. We turned to see her holding a large rolled paper. She spread it on a small table, smoothing out the edges. The schematic of our building stared back at us, marked with notes I couldn't make out from where I stood.

"That is… detailed," I moved closer to look. My finger hovered over the lines, not wanting to smudge anything. "Why would he have this?"

Archer's gaze was fixed on the schematic. "He’s been watching everyone. This is more than just curiosity."

Max chuckled quietly, though his face was serious. "Creepy old man with a bunch of guns and a schematic of the building? Classic horror movie material.
